Today's main activity was Fossil Making. No matter where it took place, this activity would be messy. We discussed what fossils are, where they can be found, and how they got there. We then set to work making our own. Each girl got a cup, some grey modelling clay, and a spoon. I set a variety of plastic animals on the table and let the girls choose what type of fossil they wanted to make. The clay became the "mud" at the bottom of a lake, the plastic toys were then used to make an impression into the clay, and then Plaster of Paris was mixed and poured onto the clay to create the fossil. We let them sit for 24 hours and then popped them out of the cups. Here are our fossils! Note that the one in the centre is a headless Zebra. The other fossils were a dog, 2 snakes, and a bee.
Before heading outside for some much-needed water play (the temperature is rising in the house due to a broken air conditioner!), we made "dirt and worms" to eat. This snack is composed of chocolate pudding, chocolate cookie crumbs, and gummy worms. All of the girls ate the worms, took one bite of the dirt, and then dove into their lunch boxes for their fruit. I do believe that the dirt was too sweet for their poor taste buds.
